On Board Since June 26, 2019
Bobby Thompson joined the Board of Governors in 2019. He is a Senior Manager in the Assurance practice at EY, focused on providing audit and advisory services to Canadian and global financial institutions. He holds the professional designations of Chartered Professional Accountant and Chartered Financial Analyst.
Bobby is proud to be a part of the community and giving back to the hospital. Prior to joining the Board he was President of the Board of Directors for the Grand River Hospital Volunteer Association. During that time, the Volunteer Association doubled its annual donations to the Grand River Hospital Foundation as well as expanded its operations through the opening of the Tim Hortons in the Freeport Campus.
"Prior to joining the GRH Foundation, I had the privilege of being a member of the Board of Directors of the GRH Volunteer Association, including being the President from 2015-2019. The Volunteer Association is the body that represents the over 1,000 volunteers at the hospital. Additionally, the Volunteer Association operates the KW Campus and Freeport Campus Gift Shops as well as the Tim Hortons at each location. All proceeds from operations are donated to the hospital, either through the GRH Foundation or through providing patient services (i.e. holiday dinners, hygiene kits, etc.). I was fortunate to oversee the application, design, building, financing, and opening of the Freeport Tim Hortons. This was a major achievement providing both a patient and staff service (being a great coffee alternative) as well as provide an annuity stream of revenues to support hospital capital expenditures. Also over that time, I worked with many stakeholders driving the annual donation from $100K to over $250K in four years. I cherished my time in this role and the people I worked with. I was inspired daily by health care providers and developed an even stronger passion to give back to GRH, leading to my role with the Foundation.
I am the Treasurer of the GRH Foundation. I embody the love of finance and accounting through professional and personal activities. In addition to my employment at EY, I serve as treasurer on two not-for-profit boards and instruct senior-level accounting courses part-time at Laurier. I also have two children (soon to be three), so there is hockey and soccer which also keep me busy. That essentially takes up all of the time in the day!
A world-class healthcare system is important to me and my family because I am a Type 1 diabetic. I have had multiple children born and cared for at GRH. My partner and wife is a Respiratory Therapist as St. Mary’s General Hospital. I have a number of family members who have received various care throughout their stages of life, including exceptional end-of-life care for my Poppa, who shared the same name as I. Health care is ubiquitous in our lives. We expect a strong, world-class healthcare system. This is why I donate my time to the Board and believe that a world-class healthcare system is essential."
One of Bobby's Waterloo Region gems...
"One of my favourite gems of the region would be in Doon South. There are a number of walking trails through natural areas, including the Tilts Brush. This has been the source of many outings for my family and some of the most comforting scenery when de-stressing is needed."
