Why a grateful mother plays the Hospital’s 50/50 lottery

When a grateful patient or family gives back to Grand River Hospital, they help make the experience better for others who are going through similar situations. By playing the Care 50/50 lottery, our most recent grand prize winner, Janet-Lynn, is doing just that in memory of her daughter.

Two years ago, Janet-Lynn’s daughter, Samantha, passed away at Grand River Hospital, creating a personal connection that led her to want to support the Hospital and give back.

“[My daughter] came for some tests … and they ended up in Emergency. And about five days later she passed of cancer,” said Janet-Lynn, later adding, “We didn’t know she had cancer at the time.”

Losing someone you love can be devastating, especially when it happens unexpectedly. But Janet-Lynn and her family are so appreciative of the Grand River Hospital team members who looked after her daughter and provided exceptional care.

“The care she did receive in those few days she was here was excellent — the doctors, the nurses, everyone,” Janet-Lynn recalled.

This is the true reason behind why Janet-Lynn plays the Care 50/50 lottery: her love for her daughter and the gratitude she feels for the staff who cared for her. And, while Janet-Lynn and her family are grateful for her grand prize winnings, she ultimately hopes that her support will help the Hospital continue to give other families that same level of exceptional care her daughter received when she needed it most.

“Whether you win or lose, it doesn’t matter because your money is going to a good cause,” she explained.
