Stem Cell Transplant Therapy: WHY

Ontario has been experiencing ongoing capacity pressures for the treatment of complex malignant hematology for several years. These capacity pressures have been further exacerbated by the COVID pandemic.

Ontario Health-Cancer Care Ontario (OH-CCO) is working with stem cell transplant and community partner hospitals and the Ministry of Health to address the current capacity challenges for complex malignant hematology services (Lukemia, Lympohma & transplant). This involves providing some patients with treatment options at another facility within Ontario, or in some cases, in the United States.

Grand River Hospital has also been working with the support of OH-CCO and the Juravinski Cancer Centre in Hamilton, to develop an autologous stem cell transplant program. An autologous stem cell transplant is a treatment modality for some people living with lymphoma and myeloma. It involves removing some of the patients’ blood stem cells, getting a high dose of chemotherapy, and then re-infusing stem cells back afterwards. The re-infused stem cells act as a rescue and help re-grow blood cells after the high dose of chemotherapy. This transplant program extends and saves lives.

The Grand River Hospital team has the skill set to deliver stem cell transplants here in our own community and is passionate about this possibility.
