My Story

My name is Cyndy McLean.  I was a patient at the GRRCC starting in March 2019.  On my 49th birthday, I received my first treatment for metastatic colon cancer and had a total of 21 chemotherapy treatments over a 10-month period.  The staff at GRRCC provided me with exceptional care while addressing the concerns of my pre-existing medical condition. I am paraplegic as a result of a spinal cord injury after falling 80ft off a cliff while hiking in 2003.

About Chemo Chairs

As basic as a chair may seem, patients receiving cancer care sit for prolonged periods of time and their comfort during a long and taxing treatment is critical.  GRRCC wants to replace their ageing chairs with new chairs ($7000 each) that will offer patients greater comfort and functionality during their treatment while also addressing the ergonomic needs of nurses delivering this important care.

My Fundraising Event

To bring awareness and raise funds for GRRCC, I will be Cycling 4 Chemo Chairs.  I will use a handcycle which is a uniquely designed trike that is propelled exclusively using my hands/upper body.  Between September 9-30, I will complete 10 rides of 21km each, representing the 10 months and 21 chemo treatments I received at GRRCC.  I will handcycle in the communities of Guelph, Fergus, Elora, Elmira, Milbank/Linwood, North Perth, Waterloo, Cambridge and Kitchener.
