On May 19th, 2024 (rain or shine!), participants will kayak, canoe or paddle board down the Grand River, finishing at Grand River Hospital's Freeport Campus. Bring your own craft (kayak, canoe, SUP board, bottle raft), don't forget a paddle!

Teams can choose either the 46km eight-hour journey or a leisurely four-hour afternoon paddle—all to raise money for Grand River Hospital in support of our vision of a world class health system! View the routes and starting points.

Teams can choose which of the hospital's Areas of Care they would like to fundraise for: Cancer Care, Continuum of Care, Emergency Care, Grand River Kids, Kidney Care, Learning + Innovation, Mental Health or Patient Experience.

*Please note, we will postpone to June 23rd if there is inclement weather

FAQs

Event Route

  • 4-hour trip will start at Kaufman Flats (546 Woolwich Pl, Waterloo, ON N2J 4G8)
  • 8-hour trip will start at Wilson's Flats #4 (6285 8 Line W, West Montrose, ON N0B 2V0)

What happens if there's severe weather (thunder & lightning)

Before the event: We will watch the weather closely and make a call by 8pm the night before

During the event: At any point, if there is bad weather we will delay the event. If you are on the water we will ensure everyone gets to the side and out of the water safely and access from there.

When do we need to be at the starting point?

Up to you but I would recommend 5-10 mins before departure. 8hr route will depart at 8 am / 4hr route will depart at roughly 11 am

Where do we park?

There will be parking but spaces will be very limited so if you can have someone drive you it is recommended.

How do we get back to the start point to collect our vehicles?

Last year we had a group of participants drop a car a the endpoint and then drive to the starting point to collect their car once they were done. This is up to you to arrange.

What provisions are in place to safely store our kayaks at the endpoint until we can come back with our vehicles to get them?

There will not be any. Our best suggestion is to either have a car at the endpoint or someone with space in their vehicle to pick you up or have.

Canoeing the Grand is also offering a shuttle service so please contact Shelly for details. customerservice@canoethegrand.com or (519) 896-0290
