"I was not involved with GRH or GRHF prior to joining the Board. I have always been involved and interested in serving the community and participated on a number of other not-for-profit boards in Waterloo Region. I had friends and work colleagues that had been Foundation members and passionate supporters of the Hospital in the past.

About 10 years ago, my mom was diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma and through her caregivers and treatment I had the opportunity to see the wonderful Grand River Hospital Cancer team and facility in full operation. It was eye-opening to understand that we have a world-class cancer care centre here in Waterloo Region that impacts the lives of so many in our community. Being involved in the Foundation is one small way of supporting the amazing work that our world class team of caregivers provide.

World class health care is critical for the success of our region and our families - providing supporting care through all phases of our life journey. Waterloo Region deserves a world class healthcare system to support the many aspects of our growing community including new immigrants, the ageing population and those experiencing mental health challenges. And at the heart of the "system" are the caregivers whose amazing passion and dedication to serving our community saves lives, improves our quality of life and makes us proud to call Waterloo Region home."

One of Steve's Waterloo Region gems...

"Mount Hope Cemetery. Originally located on the current site of Grand River Hospital, the cemetery was moved one block north of the hospital in 1868 and is the resting place of many of Kitchener-Waterloo's early notables with names such as Breithaupt, Kaufman, Schneider, Walper, Bauer, Doerr (Dare), and Krug. it's a quiet oasis in the middle of the city where you will also find memorials to Joseph E Seagram, who donated the land of the current GRH site and George Schlee, the original builder of the hospital."
